Allein in Europa werden infolgedessen bis 2030 mehr als eine Million Tonnen Lithium f\u00fcr Elektrofahrzeuge ben\u00f6tigt werden. Herk\u00f6mmliche Lithiumgewinnungsmethoden bringen erhebliche Umweltauswirkungen mit sich. Abh\u00e4ngig vom Gewinnungsprozess sind der CO<sub>2<\/sub>-Fu\u00dfabdruck sowie der Wasser- und Landverbrauch immens. Abh\u00e4ngig vom Gewinnungsprozess sind der CO<sub>2<\/sub>-Fu\u00dfabdruck sowie der Wasser- und Landverbrauch signifikant. Der erhebliche Fl\u00e4chenverbrauch ist auch f\u00fcr die Umwelt eine Herausforderung und f\u00fchrt dar\u00fcber hinaus zu sozialen Spannungen in den Abbaul\u00e4ndern. Die Mineralien werden in der Regel abgebaut, wenn sie in einer Konzentration von etwa 1% vorliegen. 99 % des abgebauten Materials ist somit nicht verwertbar. Das Erz wird anschlie\u00dfend auf 5 bis 6 % aufkonzentriert, bevor es einen langen Transportweg in die Raffinerien zur\u00fccklegt &#8211; von denen die meisten in China stehen. Um die 94 bis 95 % des verschifften Materials sind daher nicht verwertbarer Abfall. Die Lithiumgewinnung aus Sole mithilfe von Verdunstungsbecken erfordert eine gro\u00dfe Menge an Wasser an den teilweise trockensten Gegenden unserer Erde.
