Frankfurt: There is little left of the centuries-old mining tradition in Germany in 2021. Even today, valuable raw material deposits lie dormant under rock deposits and water between the Erzgebirge and Upper Rhine Rifts.

Several projects have paid particular attention to the Upper Rhine Rift between Frankfurt and Basel. Probably the largest lithium source in Europe is located beneath the 300-kilometer long plain . A metal that is built into all smartphones, laptops and wireless headphones these days and is one of the most important components for the batteries of electric cars.

Start-ups like Vulcan Energy or companies like the energy group EnBW are working on processes to extract lithium from the hot thermal water underground – with the help of geothermal energy.
