Vulcan Awarded EU Strategic Project Status Under Critical Raw Materials Act
Vulcan Energy's Phase One Lionheart Project has been recognised as a Strategic Project under the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act, highlighting its importance to strengthening Europe's domestic lithium supply chain and energy security. The designation supports the project's role in helping increase Europe's capacity to produce critical raw materials while advancing access to funding opportunities and streamlined regulatory processes.

The European Commission has recognised Vulcan Energy's Phase One Lionheart Project as a Strategic Project under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), marking a significant milestone for the development of Europe's domestic lithium industry.
The CRMA, which came into effect in 2024, was established to strengthen Europe's supply of critical raw materials, reduce reliance on imports from third countries and accelerate the development of strategic projects across the European Union. Strategic Project designation is reserved for projects that are considered important to Europe's long-term industrial resilience and supply chain security.
The Phase One Lionheart Project was selected following a competitive assessment process in which 170 applications were reviewed by independent experts across technical, financial and environmental criteria.
The designation recognises Vulcan's integrated approach to lithium production, combining lithium extraction with renewable geothermal energy generation in Germany's Upper Rhine Valley. The project is designed to produce domestically sourced lithium chemicals while supplying renewable electricity and heat to local communities and industry.
Strategic Project status provides a pathway for engagement with the CRMA financing subgroup, which supports projects in accessing private and public funding sources. The designation may also facilitate access to certain European development and cohesion funding mechanisms through national and regional authorities.
Phase One Lionheart is expected to play an important role in supporting the European Union's objectives to expand domestic raw material extraction and processing capacity while strengthening supply chain resilience for the battery and electric vehicle sectors.
Commenting on the announcement, Vulcan Energy Managing Director and CEO Cris Moreno said:
"Achieving Strategic Project status from the European Commission validates the importance of our integrated lithium and renewable energy project to European industry and further strengthens momentum as we advance Phase One Lionheart.
This designation recognises the strategic importance of developing domestic sources of critical raw materials in Europe. With access to one of Europe's largest lithium resources, we are well positioned to support the European Union's ambitions to increase local supply and reduce dependence on imports."
As Europe continues to prioritise secure and locally sourced critical raw materials, the recognition of Lionheart as a Strategic Project further reinforces Vulcan's role in helping build a domestic European lithium value chain.
